In this tutorial we’ll be playing “Brand New Key” by Melanie Safka. An absolute joy! I hope you love learning this song as much as I did!
This was a request – sometimes I get requests for songs that are done by soooo many people, but if you’re particularly drawn to my teaching style, and want to practice your fingerpicking and faster chord changes, this would be a good choice!
The video covers just chords for GCEA tuning, but I have chord charts for both GCEA and Baritone tunings.
In this post we have a video and chord chart for “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel. This version is in the key of C, as opposed to its original key of G. I recommend trying both keys to see which one fits your voice the best! Even though I can sing in a low range, I felt like I could project a bit better in this higher key.
This arrangement is in G, which worked better for baritone ukulele and for my female singing voice. I have song sheets for both GCEA and Baritone tunings on this page.

This song has been speaking to me a lot lately. I think this project, this content I create, the things I share so more people can partake in music making – that may be the “great machinery serving something beyond me.” Maybe this work is my orchard.
Enjoy it, and happy New Year!
I was like, “I’ll just make those two Christmas tutorials and call it good.” Right.
This song is challenging, not just because of the chords used, but the sheer number of chords that we don’t see terribly often in the simpler songs. Hopefully in the video it helps when I break it down, it definitely took a lot of time for me to learn this. Don’t give up!

This is a collection of 9 easy (meaning no barre chords, usually less than 4 chords per song, no 4-finger chords), secular Christmas songs you can learn and play along with on the BARITONE ukulele. When you’re learning, please feel free to utilize the YouTube functions of slowing down the video to half speed or repeating chapters. Some of the changes happen fast!
Songs included: Deck the Halls, O Christmas Tree, Silver Bells, All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Up on the Housetop, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bells, and The 12 Days of Christmas.
