“Leatherwing Bat” for Baritone Ukulele

This song is so much fun to sing because of its modal character. The chords move quickly, but it’s okay because they’re easy chords and there are only 3 of them (G, D7, em).

In the past, I have used this song as a basis for teaching improvisation on the recorder. You can start with B-A-G, then add the lower E as the student(s) get comfortable.

“Mary Ann” – Chord Chart and Video

This is my favorite song to teach with only 2 chords!

Why did I chose to teach it C-G7 for this video? I seriously have no idea, because when I was teaching this to young kids it was much easier to teach this song using F and C7. Ah well. Maybe I’ll make an F-C7 version if there is demand.

This is “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin. I love this song so much. I love the emotional meaning of the color blue (my favorite color), his use of mixed major and minor tonalities, and the melody itself of course. Kids love this song, too!

Have fun with this song that is an excellent example for teaching AABA form and a great introduction to The Beatles. This arrangement includes the C, am, F, and G7 chords for the A section and F, dm and Bb chords for the B section.

This 90’s classic is one of my favorites and one of the musical through-lines through my life! If you wake in the morning and you step outside, and you feel like you need to take a deep breath and get real high…you should scream at the top of your lungs, “WHAT’S GOING ON?!?!”

This song is a great one for learning because it only has 3 chords, but they’re different from our very beginning easy songs. We’ve got A, D, and b-minor to get you real comfy with a barre chord. The chord progression is repetitive, so this is also a great one for practicing strumming.

This is my collection of 10 kids’ songs that only use 2 chords on the ukulele. Songs include the Itsy Bitsy Spider, Make New Friends, Baby Bumblebee, My Darling Clementine, Did You Ever See a Lassie, This Old Man, Six Little Ducks, The Wheels on the Bus, The Farmer in the Dell, and the Hokey Pokey. In this resource, all of the songs use the C and G7 chords.

To supplement the video, I have created song sheet downloads for each ukulele tuning – GCEA and DGBE. It’s always tricky to find good kids’ songs with only 2 chords, so I hope you find this convenient! I always display chord diagrams on the pages for the ease of people still learning.
